Refractive Surgery with Implantable Contact Lenses - ICL
The alternative to Lasik for cases in which the visual impairment is not a candidate for this procedure is the insertion of implantable contact lenses (ICL) or phakic intraocular lenses.
ICL insertion consists of an outpatient procedure in which a lens is placed between the iris and the crystalline lens to correct the following visual impairments:
-Moderate to severe myopia
-Moderate to high astigmatism
-Thin cornea
-Dry eye syndrome
If a high-grade of correction beyond the capabilities of laser is required ICL may correct the visual impairment.
The advantages of implantable contact lenses are:
-The procedure is fast and safe
-It takes no more than 15 minutes per eye
-It is a reversible surgical procedure In the case of unsuitability, it can be removed
-Post-operative discomfort is diminished
-It is the ideal treatment for myopic patients with high diopters, thin cornea or dry eye syndrome
-It is compatible with Lasik-Intralase as the cornea remains intact throughout the lens implantation process.
